Am I the only one here to think that Tangled’s “Villian” Gothel wasn’t actually all that evil at all.Yes, sure, she kidnapped Rapunzel, took her away from her parents, took her freedom and locked her into a tower. But she could have also used Rapunzel as a slave which she never did. She raised her like a mother. Yes, in some events of the movie she tries to do evil things to Rapunzel, and yes, she is evil, which I’m not gonna deny. She wanted Rapunzel’s gift for herself and hid her from the world. No arguments there. But the movie really led me to believe that even though she cared the most about Rapunzel’s hair she also cared about Rapunzel.
If we think about the time when Gothel comes back after they have had that fight she says, “I’m making hazelnut soup for dinner. Your favourite. Surprise!. If you think about it wasn’t that so thoughtful? She really didn’t have to do any of that. And Rapunzel asks her for the paint from the white shells Gothel once brought her. When thinking of this ‘once bought me’ it must obviously mean that Gothel bought her the paint on her own because Rapunzel never left the tower and wouldn’t have known when and which paint and from where would you get. Also when Rapunzel asks for that and even though it was a three days trip Gothel still really went. There is another arguable time where Gothel comes to Rapunzel after Rapunzel heals Flynn’s hand after the time they almost drowned. Now it may seem that Gothel is pushing Rapunzel and by saying, “look at you now really? You think he’s impressed”, everyone’s reaction at that time would normally be, Oh! She’s so cruel. How can she say that poor Rapunzel, and all, but if you think about it, Gothel wanted Rapunzel to be upset and say that she’s not gonna come with her. Although this is done later to sabotage Flynn and make it look like he left her with those 2 thug brothers and took off with the crown, can’t it be that she saw the ‘Wanted’ poster and knew that he was a thief and besides her motive being that she had to get Rapunzel back before she realizes she’s the princess she could also have done it trying to save her from the Wanted Thief. She didn’t know how he really was, and lets face it, they didn’t get Flynn’s nose right so he did look pretty vicious and kinda sly. There’s also the time when Rapunzel begs her to let Flynn heal and in return she’ll not fight her and will go with her. And Gothel let her. She could have just let Flynn die and forced Rapunzel to come. But she still let Rapunzel heal him.
I think the movie had less evil so it made it different from every other movie but still ending up as a totally awesome movie in the end. But I just feel that most people didn’t realize it (by most people I mean all my friends who watched the movie with me and didn’t see how I saw it) that how Gothel may just a bit have cared for Rapunzel. How she wanted her hair but still wanted Rapunzel too. She could have just locked Rapunzel up in a dungeon type place, fed her just barely enough to keep her alive, and used her powers which wud have definitely been a lot easier and she wouldn’t have even seen the lanterns on her birthday in the first place. Which reminds me of the time when Rapunzel asks Gothel to let her go see the lanterns on her birthday. Rapunzel would only know about her birthday if Gothel told her which means Gothel did.
Overall, evil Gothel, yup definitely, but also cared about Rapunzel, absolutely. I mean if you think about it, like in the movie frozen, what happened with Elsa, could have very easily happened with Rapunzel too. Not “exactly”. Something like people chasing her for her power and she running off. There also might have been some other person, who was so evil, that when they came to know about Rapunzel’s powers, they really did put her in some dungeon for the rest of her life. Maybe the two thug brothers would have stolen her instead of the crown and sold her someplace else. In the end let’s face it, of all the things that could have gone wrong in Rapunzel’s life Gothel was the least dangerous option. So after noticing all this, at the end, I guess, I was expecting that mother Gothel gets a a fairly happy ending too, but no regrets with the ending, because she was an old hag and was supposed to die maybe centuries ago. Plus, I love how innocent Rapunzel’s character is and after noticing everything that she knew and learnt was a lie, it would have really been heartbreaking for her. But, she reunites with her parents, so everything ended exactly how it was supposed to. But I really couldn’t help but wonder if I was the only one to notice all these things, and didn’t think that Gothel was really all that evil. I guess the movie can be seen from two perspectives.
